In a world that expects everything to be done with a simple snap of the fingers, a world that rewards quantity over quality, Aka Moon invite us to take the opposite viewpoint, to open ourselves to the diversity of the world and to be insatiably curious. Establishing a dialogue between bass, saxophone, and drums, their music takes us to the diverse worlds and cultures they have encountered in their travels and that have left their mark. They fill the silences with echoes and a jungle of sounds, melodies, scales, rhythms, nuances of unusual richness, virtuosic harmonies, and evocations of infinite places in memory. In their music, we feel the soul of various continents, Africa, Asia… and the trio of musicians places no limits or borders on their creative and exploratory spirit.
They are globally recognised as one of the best groups to emerge from the Belgian jazz scene in recent decades. The three musicians met thirty years ago and solidified their musical relationship with a trip to the Aka Pygmies in Africa, where they realised their vocation to create a musical language that synchronised various cultures. Their second major journey was to India, followed by the Balkans, Arab countries, Cuba... and a blend of classical and contemporary cultures.
The trio Aka Moon do not like to be pigeonholed; they are advocates of creative eclecticism. Their compositions form a complex rhythmic amalgam, and their concerts are genuine journeys that flow through unexpected passages, seeking new rhythmic and harmonic paths, open to improvisation, enjoying the journey without knowing where it will lead them.
