The ménage à jazz concerts are one of the main hallmarks of Alternatilla Jazz. They achieve one of the main objectives of the festival: to take advantage of the exchange and cultural diversity that enables the connection of musicians from different cultures. In this way, the program brings together different ways of understanding jazz while prioritizing cultural fusion, instrumental dialogue and the surprise of improvisation.

On this occasion, we propose a meeting between two Portuguese musicians: Eduardo Cardinho on the vibraphone and the double bassist André Rosinha, on the trumpet from Cadiz Bruno Calvo and on the drums the Minorcan Joan Moll.

The hybridization of styles and spontaneity are the protagonists in a promising plural conversation that will once again push the limits of jazz and expand the domains of this universal homeland called music. A unique live performance that attendees of the Alternatilla Jazz Festival will be able to enjoy exclusively.

Bruno Calvo Quartet is a project recently created in the city of Amsterdam (Netherlands), made up of four of the most talented young musicians on the European improvised music scene; coming from countries such as Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. In recent months the group has performed in important venues and festivals, including the prestigious Bimhuis (Amsterdam) or the InJazz Festival in Lantaren Venster (Rotterdam).

In March 2018 they embarked on an extensive tour to promote their first album, Outlines, recorded in February and released by the prestigious label Fresh Sound New Talent. The group combines fundamental elements of the jazz tradition such as blues, improvisation and a strong sense of rhythm with other stylistic elements ranging from pop to influences from contemporary music.

Their original or unusual composition, without a properly harmonic instrument, forces the musicians to change the interpretative approach they would have in a band that included piano or guitar. It is interesting how the winds —trumpet and saxophone— interrelate forming counterpoints in which the melodic lines intertwine, and create a homogeneous sound from which modern harmonies emerge, with the help and inspiration of an energetic rhythm section that, in addition to providing a uniform vital and modern breath, also provides an infinity of subtle colors. The repertoire mostly contains original compositions written specifically for the group, but it is common to perform arrangements of jazz standards or songs with influences from pop music or other musical styles.

Eduardo Cardinho has a degree in Jazz from ESMAE, with 19 values. He won several competitions, including the Fermo International Competition and the distinction as Best Instrumentalist at the São Luiz Jazz Festival 2014. In 2016 he released his first album of originals.

He was born in Marrazes / Leiria and took his first steps in music at the age of 6 at the S. Tiago de Marrazes Philharmonic, taking drum lessons with João Maneta. In 2004, he joined the Orfeão de Leiria Music Conservatory in the class of Manuel Campos, where he completed 5th grade, having won several awards at this conservatory. In 2008 he entered the Professional Music School of Espinho, where he was a student of Nuno Aroso, Rui Rodrigues, Joaquim Alves and Pedro Oliveira. The following year he won second prize in the B category of vibraphone at the International Percussion Competition in Italy. He completed the percussion course in Espinho and joined the School of Music and Performing Arts of Porto, where he studied jazz vibraphone with Jeffery Davis and other teachers such as Nuno Ferreira, Abe Rábade and Michael Lauren.

He was the winner of the Young Musicians Award (27th edition), in the Jazz category, with his project Eduardo Cardinho Quintet. In 2014, he received the award for best instrumentalist at the São Luiz Jazz Festival and is currently considered a young promise in the Portuguese jazz scene. He directs projects: Eduardo Cardinho Quintet, João Barradas and Eduardo Cardinho Quartet, Eduardo Cardinho Lisbon Trio. In 2016, he won the Young Musicians Award in the Jazz Combo category with the group “Home”.

André Rosinha (Sintra, 1987), Portuguese double bassist. At the age of 17, and self-taught, he began playing the electric bass and a year later went to study at the Musicland Music School in Mafra, where he stayed for two and a half years. At the age of 20, he entered the music school of the National Conservatory where he began his double bass studies with teachers Manuel Rego and Miguel Leiria. At the same time, he joined the Luiz Villas-Boas – Hot Club de Portugal jazz school. Between 2009 and 2010, he gave private double bass lessons with Demian Cabaud.

In July 2010, he participated in the summer course at the Lisbon Jazz School and the Luiz Villas Boas Jazz School, and here he had the opportunity to learn from Danilo Pérez, Ben Street, Adam Cruz, Rogério Boccato and Rudresh Mahanthappa. He participated in Seminars and Masterclasses with Dave Holland, Matt Penmann, Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, Greg Hutchinson, Chris Cheek, Jorge Rossy, Matt Renzi, Jon Irabagon, Ze Eduardo, Paulinho Braga, Matt Pavolka, among others. In 2014 he completed his degree in jazz double bass at the Lisbon School of Music with professors Bernardo Moreira, Nelson Cascais with an average of 16.

He has performed at the Munster International Jazz Festival (Germany), Sopot Jazz Festival (Poland), Valado Frades Jazz Festival, International Jazz Meetings in Coimbra, Hot Club, Sunset (France), Jazzahead (Germany), Jazz Festival. from Cadiz (Spain), Funchal Jazz, Seixal Jazz, Music Days at the CCB, Casa da Música, among others. He has also played with musicians such as Perico Sambeat, Greg Osby, Alexi Tuomarila, Mario Laginha, Marc Miralta, Theo Ceccaldi, Abe Rábade, Jeffery Davis, Paula Oliveira, Joao Paulo Esteves da Silva, Joao Barradas, Roberto Negro, João Moreira, Afonso Pais, André Fernandes, among others.

Joan Moll. Born in Ciutadella de Menorca, at the age of 19 he decided to move to Barcelona to study with some of the musicians he admires. Graduated in the specialty of Jazz Drums at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) where he received classes from teachers such as: Jo Krause, David Xirgu, Joan Monné, Joan Díaz, Dani Pérez, Gorka Benítez, Agustí Fernández or Lluís Vidal among others. He has also received private lessons from musicians such as: Marc Miralta, Ramon Prats or Kenny Washington. He has participated in multiple seminars and master classes with teachers such as: John Hollenbeck, Michael Kanan, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Ben Street, Peter Bernstein, Chris Cheek, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Lage Lund, Jimmy Wormworth or Bill McHenry among others. He has performed in countries such as Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Israel or Jordan in several festivals and concerts with musicians such as: Jorge Rossy, Nelson Veras, Kavita Shah, Leo Montana, Mayte Alguacil, Santi de la Rubia, Jaume Llombart, Felix Rossy, Enrique Oliver, Roger Mas, Masa Kamaguchi, Toni Vaquer or Gabriel Amargant. He works as a teacher and has given master classes in several schools and conservatories.
