Alternatilla Jazz Band 26-v1

A band that doesn’t exist yet. Until it starts playing.

They are not coming to present a band. They are coming to invent one.

That is the essence of Alternatilla’s ménage à jazz: bringing together musicians with different musical languages, experiences and ways of thinking, placing them on the same stage and deliberately leaving part of the story unwritten.

For the first Alternatilla Jazz Band of our tenth edition, that encounter brings together Andrea Motis on vocals and trumpet, Jasper Høiby on double bass, Marta Payeras on piano and Joan Terol on drums.

Four musicians, each arriving with a world of their own behind them.

Andrea Motis is one of those rare artists who can make voice and trumpet sound like two extensions of the same instinct for storytelling. Her music moves effortlessly between jazz, song and improvisation, with an elegance that has far more to do with listening than with showing off.

On double bass, Jasper Høiby has long been one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary European jazz. A restless musician, composer and founder of the remarkable trio Phronesis, he sees the double bass not simply as something that holds the music together, but as a force capable of driving it forward, questioning it and sending it somewhere unexpected.

They are joined by Marta Payeras on piano and Joan Terol on drums: two musicians with voices of their own, a strong instinct for improvisation and something absolutely essential to a project like this — the ability to truly listen to what is happening around them.

Because this is not about smoothing out their differences. Quite the opposite. It is about putting those differences into motion. About discovering what happens when Andrea’s melody meets Jasper’s pulse; when an idea from Marta’s piano sends Joan’s drums down a different path; when a song can open up, break apart, transform and end up somewhere none of the four had imagined before walking onto the stage.

That is the whole point of ménage à jazz: every musician arrives carrying everything they have learnt, everything they have lived and their own musical personality. And from there, they build something that can only exist because those four paths have crossed.

On 22 November, the Església de Monti-sion de Pollença becomes the meeting place.

Andrea Motis. Jasper Høiby. Marta Payeras. Joan Terol.

Four musicians. Four journeys. And a band born in front of the audience.
