Andrea Motis Guitar Trio "Intimate"

Some music does not need to raise its voice to fill a room.

With Intimate, Andrea Motis does exactly that: she comes closer. She reduces the distance, leaves air between the notes and trusts something as simple — and as difficult — as playing only what the music needs.

Released in 2026, her new project brings her together with guitarists Josep Traver and Jurandir dã Silva in a deliberately stripped-back format: voice, trumpet and two guitars. A small acoustic space in which every nuance matters, and where Motis’s voice remains at the centre without the trumpet disappearing; it simply speaks more softly, waits for its moment, moves in and out of the conversation.

And conversation is probably the right word. Because Josep Traver and Jurandir dã Silva are not there simply to accompany Andrea, but to build the music with her. The guitars question, answer, support and challenge; at times they seem to leave a song almost suspended in the air. Three musicians who understand that listening can matter just as much as playing.

The repertoire is not particularly interested in borders either. i>Intimate moves naturally between jazz, bossa nova, popular song and chanson, with highly personal reworkings of music by d’Amy Winehouse, Chico Buarque, Bill Withers, Georges Brassens o Djavan, alongside original compositions. The album was recorded between Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro and Montoliu de Segarra: three different places for music that ultimately finds a shared space of its own.

Andrea Motis has spent half her life on stage, yet she still has a rare quality: she never seems interested in proving how much she can do. She sings, plays trumpet and lets the music breathe. The technique is there, of course. So is the considerable international career behind it. But here, all of that serves something much simpler: telling a song well.

Perhaps that is why the title Intimate feels so exact. It is not simply about playing in a small format. It is about closeness. Trust. Those concerts in which, for a while, the sense of a boundary between stage and audience seems to disappear.

On 21 November, Andrea Motis, Josep Traver and Jurandir dã Silva bring the Guitar Trio to the Auditori de Porreres, for the second night of Alternatilla Jazz Festival #10.

Three musicians. Two guitars. One voice, one trumpet.

And all the space they need to listen to what happens between the notes.
