Trumpet in light, island groove.
Carlos Sarduy —trumpeter, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Havana— brings a quartet where lyricism, rhythmic drive and melodic instinct set the air alight. A GRAMMY and two Latin GRAMMYs acknowledge his collaborations with artists such as Chucho Valdés and Ojos de Brujo, placing him firmly among today’s defining voices of Afro-Cuban jazz.
Cellist Martin Meléndez —trained at Havana’s Amadeo Roldán and ISA, now Barcelona-based— opens a warm space between classical lineage and Afro-Latin pulse; Aaron Puente, a Cuban double bassist based in the Pityusic Islands, lays down an elegant, elastic foundation; and Alain Ladrón, a Havana-rooted drummer, shapes a clear, contagious heartbeat. Together, the quartet breathes as one.
At Sa Panxa, Formentera, expect a set that threads Sarduy’s own compositions —spot-lighting albums like Luz— with readings that hover between the present-day jazz scene and the memory of Havana’s streets.
Music that plays with surprise and, like the island’s sea, keeps changing skin without losing its essence.
