Femme Jazz

Despite their presence and importance throughout the history of jazz, women have not always received the recognition they deserve. Jazz history has almost always been told with an undeniably male bias, yet the story of this genre cannot be understood without the role of women, who—despite nearly always having to go against the grain—have shown perseverance decade after decade. Today, the long-standing trend of sexist discrimination is finally beginning to be reversed. The visibility of women has improved significantly thanks to the slow but steady dismantling of gender prejudices—both from jazz audiences and from musicians and critics themselves.

Many women have emerged as leading figures and indispensable references in the jazz elite. The presence of women on stage playing jazz on any instrument is no longer unusual or exceptional. They do not give up.

In this educational concert, aimed at audiences of all ages, we will highlight some of the women who have excelled in this musical genre and perform arrangements of compositions written or popularized by them.
