Maria João is one of the most fascinating voices on the Portuguese music scene. Born in Lisbon in 1956, daughter of a Portuguese father and a Mozambican mother, she discovered singing at the age of 26 by chance and learned to sing by listening to the great divas of jazz -Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Elis Regina- and fell in love with the music of Betty Carter, Al Jarreau and other great leading singers of the genre. Her original voice is also portentous, and she knows how to connect with the audience.
She is a dynamic singer, but with incisive improvisations. Linked to her African roots through her mother (originally from Mozambique), she has a natural facility for rhythmic complexities and an extraordinary inventiveness when it comes to improvisation. Maria João has played with artists ranging from Bobby McFerrin to Joe Zawinul and Mário Laginha. Both in her collaborations and in the projects she leads, she has managed to impose a surprising vocal flexibility, which combines warmth and versatility. “From my father I inherited fado and from my mother, the rhythm, the colors and the energy”, she explains.
