Pierre Bauzerand Quintet
´SERENITY´
Calm can have a pulse too
Don’t let the title fool you. Serenity does not mean standing still.
For Pierre Bauzerand, serenity seems to have far more to do with finding your own place within movement. And movement is something this French pianist and composer knows well. Trained in Toulouse, he spent years travelling and performing in places as varied as Brazil, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, New York, London and Cape Verde before eventually settling in Mallorca. Somehow, all that baggage — musical and personal — finds its way between the keys of his piano.
Serenity is also a meeting point for five musicians and five different ways of understanding jazz. Alongside Bauzerand are Pepe Ragonese on trumpet, Iscle Datzira on saxophone, Toni Cuenca on double bass and Shayan Fathi on drums: a quintet formed in Mallorca, but shaped by very different backgrounds, journeys and musical experiences.
Their music moves between classic and contemporary jazz, blues, Latin jazz and echoes of classical music. You may hear traces of bBill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock or Chick Corea, but Serenity is not interested in cataloguing its influences. Instead, it absorbs them into something of its own: acoustic, open and vividly alive, with melodies that leave enough space for every musician to find a voice.
Perhaps that is the kind of serenity Bauzerand is really talking about: not the absence of movement, but the freedom to move without losing your centre.
Piano, trumpet, saxophone, double bass and drums. Five musicians who know where they come from, without needing to decide in advance where they are going.
From Mallorca to Menorca, Serenity arrives at Teatre des Born to remind us that you can dance on the inside without ever raising your voice.
