TINDERSTICKS

The Nottinghamers are already contemporary classics, the equivalent of Scott Walker for the indie generation. With their latest album, “The Something Rain” (City Slang, 2012), which they present, they have been reborn to a point that they have nothing to envy their past glory days. They have both present and past.

The British, with Stuart Staples at the front, still retain that otherworldly vibe of “Tindersticks I” (1993), the debut album where they already showed many of the traits that have marked their career.

Arrangements by and for sybarites and the baritone voice of their leader varnishing songs that are launched, without getting messy in the crescendos and with the stripe of the pants always in place, in lines previously traced by Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood. Singles that they have managed to rewrite with Staples posing as a distinguished and melancholic “crooner”, plus a string of instruments giving him cover, which now float, then link, at times cry -violin, carillon, trumpet, vibraphone, Hammond organ...-.

The group assumes that excellent chamber pop of their first three albums, received by critics with open arms, and re-emerges that beat with which they moved to soul in “Simple Pleasure” (1999) and “Can Our Love…” (2001), proving to skeptics that they also knew how to keep the bar very high when they lightened their baggage and that their style book was not as static as they were attributed to.

Although in 2005, when Staples began his solo career, there were rumors of a breakup, they stayed that way, clarified by his seventh work, “The Hungry Saw” (2008).

In 2012, with “The Something Rain”, his ninth album, soundtracks and live performances on the side, they once again claim their unfading elegance.

Yes, Tindersticks have been dyed with depth without losing their emotion.
