BART DAVENPORT & BISCUIT

The “We Used To Party” cycle is back in action. You know, the one where someone covers a great album that isn't theirs. Base (the performers) by height (the album chosen) = interest multiplied by two. Previous editions show that this is true: remember Giant Sand taking on Johnny Cash or Chuck Prophet putting himself in the shoes of The Clash. Surely you've read about this and good things.

In the case we're talking about, let's go a little further, because the base is double: Bart Davenport and Biscuit. The first, one of the Californians who has best represented the spirit of this West Coast that he comes from and that he soaked up from a very young age, when at the age of eight he learned to play the guitar while devouring the vinyl collection of his parents, some hippies of those days. It has the charm of another era, an inherent retro elegance, as if a pop version of “Mad Men” could be made with Jonathan Richman in the lead role. He will be the soloist and the band, Biscuit, from Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, who are said to be possibly the best Spanish rock'n'roll band and that's not an exaggeration at all. There will be other groups nominated for this title, but they, Biscuit, will always have to be counted for this award. They were born in 1993 because they wanted to stop being a garage band like the band they came from, Blue Bus, and intended to pursue melody and pop. Their 1997 debut, “Lunch Music”, confirmed this. Not only do they have a good collection of influences (The Who, Redd Kross, The Byrds, MC5...), but they know how to transmit this with passion and fury, without being influenced by fashions.

Davenport and Biscuit have chosen to join forces to cover “Sound Affects”, by The Jam, a classic, of those works for which time does not pass, which are still here, above.

If the group led by Paul Weller (currently current due to the release of his new album, “Sonik Kicks”, in March) was something like the Kinks of the 80s, the aforementioned album meant their... “Revolver” (we know, it's by the Beatles, but that's what it sounds like). A “back to basics”, direct, only abstract in the lyrics, with psychedelia but without excesses, full of infectious pop, as is the case with “That's Entertainment” and “Man In The Corner Shop”. Two bases for this height = a lot of interest, whether you are mod or not, whether you like British or Californian pop.

"Bart Davenport belongs to a holy trinity of soul pop singer-songwriters who complete Josh Rouse and Ron Sexsmith" - Mondosonoro

"As great as they are humble, those from Vilanova built a sweaty repertoire based on their impeccable mastery of pop, soul, rock and psychedelia, crowning it with their sensational version of Redd Kross. (...) if the Meows are the flower of rock made in Catalonia, Biscuit are the cream" - Ruta 66

About 'Sound Affects':

"The Jam's best album" - Paul Weller

"Essential" - BBC
